Embedded within a Mungo stratum in the Willandra Lakes World Heritage Region is a 100,000- year-old rich ancient red. Inspired by a remarkable encounter with this vivid distillation of a past epoch, Natalie O’Connor presents a series of experimental observations that delve into this lush and loaded hue. Drawing upon an extensive background in the international colour manufacturing industry and PhD research at the UNSW, O’Connor’s practice melds both artistic, sensorial and scientific sensibilities, proffering a unique perspective on the possibilities of the palette. As observers delve into the intricate relationships between colour, history, and our perception of the world, Nature of Redness becomes a visual and contemplative journey into the materiality, essence, and development of this timeless and captivating colour. Nature of Redness was developed with assistance from Winsor & Newton and in consultation with Elders of the Three Traditional Tribal Groups (3TTG), the communities of Mungo and the NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service at the Willandra Lakes Region World Heritage Area.</image:caption>

<image:title>before, below and behind me - When The Waters Returned</image:title>
<image:caption>When The Waters Returned was painted in 2025 and sees a transition of materials from watercolour on paper to acrylics on canvas. It recalls on memory of a place, Paika Lake, on the edge of the Willandra World Heritage Area. This was originally sheep farming land and it carries the remnants of colonial Australia left behind. The lake that sits there now has been reclaimed through the efforts of the landowner Di Williams and her late husband John, who wanted to see the originally wetlands restored to a time before colonisation. On one visit the lake that had been forced to dry up again to remove the carp, was filling again as the weir at Paika Creek had been reopened and the waters flooded the plains. It was a series of misty rainy days where there was no direct shadows and the raindrops seemed to sit suspended in the air.</image:caption>

<image:title>artwork - Recent Works</image:title>
<image:caption>Continuing her investigation of pigments through the hues of redness, Natalie has explored the fragile nature of colour and its interconnectedness to place and people. Every mark painted or drawn, erasure or stain of red earth pigments is purposefully laid in layers that reflect time and documentation of walking across the dunes of the Mungo Lunettes, capturing its light above and its darkness in the ancient layers below. In more recent works, her attention is drawn to the gateway to Mungo, Paika Station at Balranald. An introduction of blueness can be seen in When The Waters Return as an intrusion of her red palette but it captures the ebb and flows of water and life over a place filled with ancient stories.</image:caption>
